MIT CodeIt is a student-run club that holds free introductory computer science classes for middle school girls and nonbinary students. After the unfortunate interruption of the spring semester session, we launched a virtual summer pilot program. Over six weeks, 25 middle schoolers attended class on Zoom to learn Scratch, a block-based programming language, and participate in confidence- and community-building activities. Our mentors, students, and parents celebrated the culmination of the program this past Sunday with a final project showcase. CodeIt will continue offering free, virtual Scratch classes this fall.
